Who Will Win Pakistan Super League?
PSL Predictions 2021
Pakistan Super League predictions for season 6 of the tournament is placed here. Who will win the 6th season of the Pakistan Super League? After last season’s enthralling campaign, the bookmakers have found to difficult to separate the teams this year. This is presumably because the regular season was so hotly contested, and very little divided the six teams. Another win for either of the bottom two teams could have seen them reach the playoffs as it was that tight. Let’s take a look at the betting and see where the value is:
PSL Outright Winners
Karachi Kings – 3/1
Lahore Qalanders – 7/2
Quetta Gladiators – 4/1
Peshawar Zalmi – 9/2
Islamabad United – 5/1
Multan Sultans 5/1
Looking at the betting, it’s the reigning champions Karachi that has been installed as the favourites, and it would be hard to argue against that. However, one thing stands out: last year’s regular-season winners Multan are the outsiders of the competition. Let’s now take a brief look at each team and see if we can predict this season’s winners.
Karachi Kings – 3/1
The Kings reigned supremely last season, and after finishing the regular season in second place, they beat Multan in the semi-finals and then Lahore in the final. This was the first time they won the tournament and is the first time they have reached the final. They had the league’s highest run-scorer in Azam, who scored 294 runs and picked up the most fours in the league. Looking at Karachi’s team that they have assembled for this season, it is clear that they mean business again and will be there or thereabouts come crunch time. They have some excellent batsmen backed up by a couple of great all-rounders in Dan Christian and Mohammad Nabi. However, they are likely to rely on these two more with the ball than the bat as their bowling attack lacks real quality.
Lahore Qalanders – 7/2
Lahore finished last season in third place and was arguably the most in-form team heading into the playoffs. They destroyed the regular-season winners Multan in the second eliminator but came up short against the Kings in the final. Lahore had some fine bowling displays last season as their bowlers posted three of the best four figures of the season, which was capped up by Patel, who took four wickets for five runs in one spell. You would find it hard to find better figures anywhere in the world! They also had Hafeez, who had some of the best economic figures of the season. Big Ben Dunk led the way with the bat as he cleared the rope 23 times, more than any other player in the league. They have retained both Dunk and Hafeez this season while adding Rashid Khan and Joe Denly. They have all of the firepower to go one step further this season, and they now also have the experience of being in a PSL final, which could be worth its weight in gold.
Quetta Gladiators – 4/1
The Gladiators had their worst PSL season ever last year, finishing in fifth. This was the first time that the three-time finalists had finished outside the top four. They had the leagues leading wicket-taking in Hasnain, who had a fine season taking 14 wickets. But unfortunately for Quetta, that was as good as it got as most of their other players failed to shine. The Gladiators have gone big in the offseason and brought in some big guns as they look to get back to the glory days of the past. They have retained Hanain and have Ben Cutting, Cameron Delport, Chris Gayle, Dale Steyn, and England’s Tom Banton. They have a good mixture of youth and experience in their squad, and they will be a real force this season.
Peshawar Zalmi – 9/2
Much like the Gladiators, Peshawar is also three times finalists, and they too had their worst season ever last year, finishing fourth in the regular season before losing to Lahore in the playoffs. Akmal was the real star for them last year as he posted the biggest score of the season. He scored 101 runs from 55 balls before getting out. He and Roussouw of the Sultans were the only two players to score centuries last season. He also scored 41 boundaries last season, which was a league-high. Malik also did well with the bat adding three fifties from his seven innings. They have retained both Akmal and Malik, while they can also call upon David Miller, veteran Ravi Bopara, and Sherfane Rutherford. While there is no doubting Peshawar’s talented, predominantly home-grown side, they do, however, lack depth, and they could have a similar season this year to last year.
Islamabad United – 5/1
Islamabad is the first-ever winners of the PSL and the most successful team, having won the competition twice. However, their form has deteriorated since 2018, and they came bottom of the standings last season, which was their worst ever finish. Munro and Khan both starred with the bat, reaching three half-centuries each, but there was little else to celebrate for them. They have retained Munro and Khan this season while adding the likes of England duo Alex Hales and Chris Jordan. I’m not sure they will go all the way, but I would certainly say they offer the most value from a betting perspective.
Multan Sultans – 5/1
The Sultans finished the regular season in the first position and narrowly missed out on a place in the final in a Super over to the eventual winners, the Kings. So why now are they the outsiders to win the tournament this year, I hear you ask. That is an excellent question when you look at their squad that contains the likes of Carlos Braithewaite, the big-hitting Chris Lynn, Afridi, Tahir, and James Vince. They are certainly no outsiders in my books and will be a match for anyone on their day.
