Sri Lanka to Play at Least One T20 in Pakistan
Reports suggest Pakistan fans could see a high-profile international at home when they look to host Sri Lanka in September or October. While Sri Lanka Cricket haven’t officially confirmed this development, the tour looks like it could go on according to their President Thilanga Sumathipala. Latest reports suggest that Sri Lanka will play one T20I against Pakistan in Lahore. The remaining matches on the tour will be played in UAE, starting with the a day-night Test from September 28.
The match in Pakistan will be played only subject to security clearance.
No international team has toured Pakistan apart from Zimbabwe since the attack on the visiting Sri Lanka side in 2009, that had left some of the players injured. Six policemen and two civilians had lost their lives in that attack as well.
Sri Lanka are to play Pakistan in an away series which is usually held in the UAE, Pakistan’s temporary cricketing home for now. However, the SLC President indicated that out of all the games to be played in the series, a T20 could be hosted in Lahore if logistical concerns are taken care of.
In a statement to the media, Sumathipala said he was happy to send the Sri Lankan side to Pakistan with their security experts having made a positive assessment of the security situation in the country.
We have three T20 games coming up against Pakistan in September and we would like to play at least one of those games in Lahore.
I call upon each one of you as members to play your role and give Pakistan the security of your support. There is always risk – there were two attacks in London during the Champions Trophy – but cricket continued under the security assurances of the ICC, so likewise we too must be as accommodating and understanding as possible with our members and extend our fullest support to them as the cricketing family of Asia.
What now needs to be seen is whether the Sri Lankan cricketers will be open to touring the country after having been at the receiving end of of that terror attack. Most of the players from that fateful tour of Pakistan in 2009 have retired and while Chamara Kapugedara is the only player who has a realistic chance of making the Sri Lankan squad, the rest of the cricketers need to be comfortable with the idea as well.

Up until the final of the PSL, Pakistan played their home matches in neutral venue such as United Arab Emirates. But after the final of the star studded 2017 PSL amidst an exceptional level of security, the Pakistan Cricket Board has proven that it is capable of hosting high profile games once again.
