Should Salman Butt be Allowed back in International Cricket?

Salman Butt is on the verge of making his comeback in international cricket according to Pakistan selector Inzamam-ul-Haq but not everyone thinks that is the right move.

Former Pakistan cricketer and current commentator Ramiz Raja has vehemently opposed the move to allow Butt back into the international frame. Raja has reasoned fixers have no place in the game and their ability to return to the sport often pushes others into the same malaise.

More recently, there have been other Pakistan cricketers involved in a spot-fixing scandal as well, with the likes of Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif been banned for five years apiece. Recently Mohammad Irfan returned from his one-year long ban.

Raja tweeted:

“Going in circles in cricket corruption- PSL guilty players fined leniently while rogue Salman Butt is green lighted to play for Pak again.”

He has often said that fixers should never be allowed back into the game even though Mohammad Amir was allowed back and is now the leading Pakistani bowler.

Recently in a chat with popular sports website, Sport360.com, Raja said,

“My take on tainted cricketers remains the same over the years. We have suffered a lot in their hands and they don’t need any mercy, they don’t need any second chance.”

He had also said it was always an honour to play for the country and when there are players within a team looking to throw away a result, then it’s not the best experience for the rest of the players who are doing their best to win their side the game.

Raja also said that banning players for two and a half years for fixing was akin to no punishment at all. Spot-fixers, according to Raja, should be banned for life.

In a recent interview with ESPNCricinfo, selector Haq had expressed delight at Butt’s form and admitted the selectors were considering selecting the opener.

He had added:

“He was there in our high-performance camp and he was exceptional. It’s fantastic to see that a player has been out for five years but still maintained a high standard of fitness.”
