PSL 2018 Draft Date & Time – October 2017
The third edition of the Pakistan Super League is set to be a grand affair with many more foreign cricketers showing their interest in the league. Last year it took place at The Dome, Dubai Sports City and by the end of it, about a 100 players were either picked afresh or retained from the previous season. This year will be no different and Geo Super TV channel is set to broadcast the PSL draft live.
The retention and trading window for the 2018 Pakistan Super League opened on July 12 and teams were given an option of retaining up to 10 players in the team. Teams are now allowed to sign up new players directly. All new players must enter the players draft to get picked.
So the five teams from the previous two seasons were allowed to retain two players each from the Platinum, Diamond and Gold category, three from the silver category and 1 from the Emerging category to make it 10 retained players at the maximum.
The sixth and the newest side in the competition, the Multan Sultans will be allowed to pick 10 players from each of the five categories in the pre-draft. What this means is that they will only have the right to those players which the first five teams do not retain in their squads.
While this could make it tougher for the side from Multan, it looks like a fair way for the old teams to retain some of their old flavour in the team – a way by which they can build around their brands.
PSL Player Retention
The owners were allowed up to October 5 to pick up the players they wanted to retain and every team retained and traded in a total of nine players apiece. The rest of the players were released by the franchises into the PSL pool, for the new team, Multan Sultan to pick before going into the PSL Draft for the third season.
The sixth side, Multan Sultans, will then be allowed to pick up nine players as well from those released by the other five. More details are awaited on this one.

What happened in the PSL 2017 Draft?
In what can easily be termed big news, former Sri Lankan captain and talisman player Kumar Sangakkara has been appointed by Karachi Kings as their mentor and captain. Babar Azam and Chris Gayle are the two other players who have been picked up by the Kings for this edition of the competition.
The Kings have also retained Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Sohail Khan, Ravi Bopara, Mohammad Amir, Saifullah Bangash and Shahzeb Hassan from the previous season for the second edition of the PSL.
Some of the other players who made it to the various squads during this PSL Draft were Anton Devcich, Brendon McCullum and Eoin Morgan along with the likes of Andre Russell, Shane Watson, Dwayne Smith, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy, Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales, Carlos Brathwaite, Sunil Narine and Dwayne Bravo among others.
Pakistan Super League chairman Nizam Sethi has also confirmed that preparations for the second edition of the competition were done and that the final will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The drafting process however, will be conducted in Dubai this October. The player salary cap has been raised be 9%.
PSL officials had confirmed that the team which finished at the bottom of the standings in the inaugural edition, Lahore Qalandars will have the first picks during each round of the 2016 Draft. They will be followed by the team which came in fourth, third and second before defending champions Islamabad United make their own picks.
England skipper Morgan had confirmed his participation around the same time in which former New Zealand skipper McCullum had given his assent to being involved in PSL 2.
The Three Lions top three fast bowlers Anderson, Broad and Finn were also a part of the PSL Draft but weren’t selected. With England expected to play international cricket around that time and the pitches in UAE not conducive for seam bowling options anyway, it does look like they were never in the reckoning to get selected.
New Zealand’s Devcich will join McCullum in the draft alongside Parnell of South Africa. All the overseas stars who will be involved in the PSL 2 draft process have considerable pedigree, especially in T20 cricket and they will definitely help raise the standard of cricket in the tournament.
Faisal Mirza, the head of player recruitment for the PSL, was also believed to be in talks with former Australian bowler Mitchell Johnson over the latter’s likely participation in PSL 2 but in the end, that did not work out.
Also added to the PSL auction 2017 list of players was Salman Butt who returned to cricket after having been suspended for spot-fixing. However there were no takers for Butt and he will need to get back to performing at the domestic level in Pakistan to earn interest and the trust of franchises.
