The Multan Sultans will be up against the Islamabad United in the 25th match of the third season of the Pakistan Super League. The action moves back to Sharjah and the game will be played on Tuesday. The match will begin at 9 pm PST (4 pm GMT).
It’s the serious business end of the league stage of the tournament and the fight is now two-fold. Five teams are vying for the top four spot to qualify for the playoffs but more vitally, two of those five teams are also looking to make it into the top two positions in order for them to get a double chance to qualify for the final.
As things stand, the Multan Sultans are in some strife from their previous two games, and need to win this encounter to ensure qualification for the playoffs. With nine points from nine games, even a loss might not rule them out but a win will not just take them to the final but also give them a reasonable chance of making the top two.
If Multan Sultans lose, they would end the league engagements with nine points and will hope the Peshawar Zalmi don’t win their remaining two matches to overtake them and make it to 10 points. The bad news for Multan is they are the only team in that top five to have a negative net run-rate and that won’t be improving any time soon if they end up losing the game.
On the other hand, Islamabad United are the form team. They are one of two to have 10 points and have three games in hand, which means if they can win two of these three remaining matches they will finish in the top two. No other team, except Quetta Gladiators can get to 14 points and even the Gladiators will need to end up victorious in both those games to ensure that.
Islamabad began the competition with one win from their first three matches but since then have won four in a row. This includes a tied game against the Lahore Qalandars they were expected to lose and ended up winning in the Super Over, and an eight-wicket, six-wicket and 26-run win over the next three games.
Interestingly, all those three wins have come in one-sided games and Islamabad have rarely been tested, with the likes of Shane Watson, Wahab Riaz, JP Duminy and Luke Ronchi having all played their part.
