The Quetta Gladiators will be up against the Lahore Qalandars in the 26th match of the third season of the Pakistan Super League. This game will be played on Wednesday in Sharjah. The match will begin at 9 pm PST (4 pm GMT).
The Lahore Qalandars have finally woken up from their long slumber. A slumber that had seen them lose eight matches in a row has been disrupted by two wins in succession; wins that won’t take them to the playoffs but those that will give them confidence going into the next season of the PSL.
Make no mistake, there will be changes to the Lahore squad for the PSL 2019 but these victories will show the management what are the kind of tactics that help them win games as opposed to that run of matches which they lost.
First, the Qalandars overcame the Multan Sultans in what should have been a one-sided game but turned out to be a hard-fought win for the former. But this was followed by a game that could have gone either way till the very last ball and even saw the Qalandars lose it off the final delivery before it was deemed to be a no-ball.
Needing three for a win, the Lahore Qalandars looked to have lost the game when the batsman Gulraiz Sadaf hit the ball straight to long-on and was caught. But a premature celebration later, a no-ball was declared, which reduced their target to 2 from 1 and a run later, the game was sent into the Super Over.
Lahore is the only team to have encountered the Super Over twice in this season and they looked to have taken the experience from the previous one to win the game in that tie-breaker.
The Gladiators, on the other hand, are currently at the top of the points table with 10 points from eight games. With a solid net run-rate and two matches in hand, even if they lose both those encounters, it would be very difficult for them to not qualify for the playoffs.
To do that they would need to lose both their games and end on 10 points and then have Peshawar Zalmi win both their games, and Karachi and Multan win at least one of their remaining matches to get knocked out. Also it would need their net run-rate to fall down dramatically and for the Zalmis’ NRR to rise up a lot to be shown the door.
While a defeat might not knock them out of the tournament, the Gladiators will want to finish in the top two for obvious reasons and hence a loss could prove to be a costly one. Still, with the Gladiators in such red-hot form and the Qalandars already out, we expect Quetta to win this one.
