The Asia Cup cricket competition returns in its ODI avatar after the previous edition had seen India win the title in its T20 format in the lead-up to that year’s World T20. 11 teams will have the opportunity to be called the best in Asia with five of these getting a direct entry into the main draw of the Asia Cup and six others fighting it out to make it to the first round as that sixth team.
Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are the five Full Member nations who will be joined by six other Asian qualifier countries in UAE, Oman, Nepal, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia in the Asia Cup. These six teams will face off in a Qualifier that will see one team emerge victorious and join the other five in the tournament main.
The Asia Cup squads will be announced closer to the start of the competition given every country in the main draw has something or the other, some cricket or the other lined up in the lead-up to the Asia Cup. Pakistan and India, for instance will be touring England and Sri Lanka are looking to play the Lankan Premier League which could also provide them as a feeder to what their best squad would be for the Asia Cup.
Interestingly with the 2019 World Cup less than a year away when the Asia Cup squads will be announced, this tournament could be used as a warm-up for that competition in the UK next year.
And as we await the announcement of the Asia Cup squads for all the 11 teams, it would be interesting to see what you think of who should make it to the teams.
